Q.- What is meant by ‘my light is spent’ ?
Ans.— It means loss of eyesight.
Q.- Why is the world ‘dark and wide’ to the poet ?
Ans.— The world is ‘dark and wide’ to the poet, as he has lost his eyesight.
Q.- Who is the ‘Maker’ in this sonnet ?
Ans.— The ‘Maker’ in this sonnet is God.
Q.- Is God a hard task master ?
Ans.— No, God is not a hard task master.
Q.- Does God require. His appreciation ?
Ans.—  Yes, God requires His appreciation.
Q.- Discuss the poet’s feelings and emotions.
Ans.— The poet is in a very turbulent state of mind. He is afraid of God. He think that since he has lost his eyesight, he cannot write poems in praise of God. Hence, God will not forgive him. But then his inner soul tell him that God does not need anyone to work for Him. What He really expects is the complete submission to Him and readiness to do anything for Him. With this feeling, he calms down. Thus poet passes through a variety of feelings and emotions in the poem.
Q.- Why is the poet sad? What has happened to him ?
Ans.— The poet is sad, as he has lost his eyesight in his middle of his life. And with this he has lost his ability to composé verses-the only talent he has. He is, therefore, worried how to serve God if he cannot write poems in His praise.
Q.- Which do you think is superior-insight or eye sight ?
Ans.— Eyesight, no doubt, is very important for human life. Without it our life becomes dependent on others. However, insight is even greater than eyesight. If we have insight as developed as that of Surdas or Milton we can have little regrets for not having eyesight.
Q.- Is God absolutely merciful? Is he a king of kings ?
Ans.— Yes, God is absolutely merciful. If He were not so, he would behave as a hard taskmaster. But He is pleased also by those who merely register their presence in His court, without doing anything. He is also a king of kings as thousands of servants are always at his command, always ready to do anything whatever He bids.
