Ans.— The biting winter wind does not hurt the speaker as does his brother’s ingratitude which he looks upon as a fierce animal with keen teeth.
Q.- Explain the mood of the poet when he says “Heigh-ho! sing, heigh-ho! unto the green holly.”

Q.- The speaker’s tragic mood is very pronounced in the poem. Elaborate.
Ans.— The speaker of the poem is a banished king. He has been a victim of ingratitude by his younger brother whom he loved and trusted the most. The ingratitude of his brother has made him sceptic and he suspects every human relation. The winter wind with its biting cold reminds him of the suffering his brother has inflicted on him through his ingratitude and he finds that the bite of the winter wind is quite bearable in comparison to man’s ingratitude.
Q.- What does the poet mean to say “Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly”? Explain.
Ans.— The banished king is deeply aggrieved at his brother’s ingratitude. It is very difficult for him to realise that the brother whom he loved so much can be so cruel to him. The betrayal in love has made him sceptic and now he cannot trust any human relation. That is why he says, ‘Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly”.
Q.- Why and how is the severe winter kinder than an ungrateful person ?
Ans.— The severity, kindness or unkindness is a matter of mental and emotional state of the person. A happy man may find even a sad song very sweet and the vice-versa. At times, our pain is so great that we lose the sensation of further pain. The speaker is so aggrieved at the cruel and unjust behaviour of his younger brother that he has lost the sensation of pain caused by other things including the biting winter wind. That is why speaker finds the severe winter wind kinder than an
ungrateful person.
