Ans.— Della sold out her dear hair to buy a platinum fob chain for her husband’s gold watch. This she did because she wanted to see her husband happy. Jim on the other hand deprived himself of his dear gold watch to buy an expensive set of comb for the beautiful long hair of his wife. The fact that they thought only of the other and did not hesitate in making sacrifices. It clearly suggests that Jim and Della loved each other very much.

Ans.— The family status of Jim and Della was not very good in terms of material prosperity. Jim’s income was a modest $20 per week. They lived in a furnished flat at $8 per week. They had only two possessions which they were very proud of. One was Jim’s gold watch and the other was Della’s hair.

However, despite the monetary constraint, they loved each other very much. They both were ready to sacrifice anything for each other. Hence, their family life was very happy one.

Of all who give and receive gifts such as they these. two are the wisest. Everywhere they are the wisest. They are the Magi.

Ans.— To sell their possessions for the Christmas gifts may not be a very wise decision. However, if we preceive the sincere feelings behind the decision, we may not call it so unwise. Love never cares for materialistic gains. Its only consideration is the happiness of the loved one. This is what Jim and Della do. Jim sells out his dear watch and Della her beautiful long hair. Hence, from the materialistic point of view the decision of Jim and Della to deprive themselves of their proud possessions might not be very right but from the point of view of love it was a great gesture.
