Ans.— Emperor Aurangzeb banned the playing of the pungi. In my opinion, this ban of the pungi was against the right to expression. Every individual has the right to have his individual choices If a ruler does not like the sound of a particular musical instrument he is free to avoid that instrument but if he bans its public performance on this ground it is an extreme measure and against the right to expression.

Q.- How did shehnai get its name ? Describe in your own words the process how the Pungi became the Shehnai.
Ans.— The Shehnai got its name on the basis of the place of its first performance as well as the first performer. The place was the Shah’s chamber and the performer was a nai (barber). Hence it came to be known as Shehnai.
There is a very interesting story about the pungi becoming the shehnai. Emperor Aurangzeb banned the playing of the pungi in the royal residence, for it had a shrill unpleasant sound. A barber of a family of professional musicians improved the tonal quality of the pungi and played it successfully before the royalty. Played by a nai in the chamber of the ‘shah’, the improved pungi became the shehnai.
