Q.- Why does the poet say that he is like grass ?
Ans.— The poet says that he is like grass because he has the ability to bounce back as does the grass after chopping and moving.
Q.- Why does the poet say that he will sprout again even after being mowed down ?
Ans.— The poet says that he will sprout again even after being mowed down because nothing can erase his identity.
Q.- What makes the poet say that people can’t erase his idenity ?
Ans.— The poet says that people can’t erase his identity because he has the capability to sprout again and his mantle can cover everything.
Q.- What will his mantle cover ?
Ans.— His mantle will cover everything.
Q.- Why has the poèt compared himself to grass ? What are the features of grass ?
Ans.— The poet has compared himself to grass because of the similarity between human life and grass. A grass is soft, smooth without any trace of roughness, flexible and can be cut easily but the more important thing is that it has the capability to sprout after being mowed or chopped. It cannot be obliterated for ever. Similar is the case with the human life. No destruction of human life or habitation can last for ever.
Q.- The poem suggests the resolute nature of the poet. Do you agree with it? Give your own opinion.
Ans.— Softness and resoluteness may appear to be mutually opposed. But this is not the case all the time. Even a soft and seemingly weak thing like grass can be resolute enough to defy any attempt of its obliteration. No mowing or chopping of the grass can destroy it for ever. The fact that the poet campares himself to the grass clearly suggests that he too has the resoluteness of the grass to survive any attempt of destruction. Optimism, thus, is the keynote of the poem.
Q.- What is the background of this poem? In what circumstances do you think this poem has been written ?
Ans.— The background of this poem is the mass destruction at various places such as Banga and Sangrur. To me, the poem seems to have be written amidst the prevailing turmoil in the world, leading to war between countries and bomb blasts in different parts of the world including India.
Q.- Summarise the poem in about 100 words.
Ans.— The poem begins with an analogy between the speaker and the grass. The speaker claims that he is like grass as he too can sprout again, grow and bounce back after he is chopped or mowed down. One can destroy everything which is related to human civilization including universities, hostels, slums, but one cannot erase the human identity, it will remain unobliterated. Rather its mantle will cover everything. It’s just a matter of time-two years, ten years or any period of time that the destructed civilization will bounce back with its full vigour and liveliness. No evil force can overcome life.
