Q.- Why does the woman call herself ordinary ?
Ans.— The woman calls herself ordinary as she is simply a housewife.
Q.- Why does the sensitivity of the ordinary woman suffer blows ?
Ans.— The sensitivity of the ordinary woman suffers blows as she has to do nothing creative except juxtaposing of carpets and curios, labelling books and tying up shoe laces.
Q.- Why is the woman unable to express her anguish ?
Ans.— The woman is unable to express her anguish as a decade of togetherness has hardened her sensitivity and so her soul can only flap itself into silence.
Q.- What is the tag which is attached to an ordinary woman ?
Ans.— Ordinariness is the tag which is attached to an ordinary woman.
Q.- With what jobs has the woman been associated ?
Ans.— The woman has been associated with looking after home and children, juxtaposing of carpets and curious, labelling books and tying up shoe laces.
Q.- 6. How might the woman be made extraordinary ?
Ans.— The woman might be made extroaordinary at the cost of a few sad dry tears.
Q.- Who is the speaker of the poem ? How does she introduce herself ?
Ans.— The speaker of the poem is a housewife. She introduces herself as an ordinary woman whose creativity is confined to drape household affairs. She has to remain busy in looking after her home, thinking about the decorations in the rooms. She has to look after her children, label their books and tie up their shoe laces. Through a long association, her sensitivity has hardened and so she can do nothing but suffer silently. “
Q.- Do you think that the ‘ordinary woman’ of the first stanza becomes rebellious in the last stanza? Which line (s) indicates it ? Explain.
Ans.— Yes, the mood of the ‘ordinary woman’ becomes gradually aggressive with each stanza. By the last stanza, she becomes quite rebellious. This becomes quite obvious when she says that her ordinariness is a tag to bind her conveniently to home and children and then adds bitterly that this tag is to make her extraordinary at the cost of a few sad dry tears. The last three lines are especially signficant in this connection.
Q.- Comment on the Juxtaposition of carpets and curio in the poem.
Ans.— ‘Carpets’ stand for the trendy modern item to decorate floors whereas ‘curios’ stand for ancient articles or objects of great artistic value or significance. The first also has the ultilitarian value but the second is meant only for artistic pleasure or a means to achieve or show off the social status of the family. The two do not go together; they appear to be juxtaposed. This is what the case of an ‘ordinary woman’ is. She too has to reconcile between two contrary things.
Q.- Behind the success of a man there is always woman.
Ans.— There have been a numer of men who have inspired the world with their success. We still remember their feats without ever realising the person who inspired these great men to achieve what they achieved. If we look closely we find that behind the success of every man there is always a woman. Tulsidas would not have composed the great epic, ‘The Ramcharit Manas’ without the chastisement of his wife Ratna. Shivaji would not have been so successful without the inspiration of his mother Jijabai. Even Kalidas would not have become the greatest poet of Sanskrit without his wife.
